Etymology  Austrelaps: 'southern Elaps' - Elaps is another genus of snakes.
ramsayi: after E. P. Ramsay, a former curator at the Australian Museum.

Description

Dark grey to reddish brown above with reddish flanks; lips heavily barred.

Similar species

Lowlands copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) - has weak barring on the lips, with only narrow pale edges on upper labial scales (versus well-defined, prominent bars).
