Etymology  Brachyurophis: 'short-tailed snake'
australis: 'southern', or more generally referring to Australia.

Description

Red to reddish-brown with a broad, dark band on both the head and nape. The pattern consists of narrow bands comprised of pale yellow to white, dark-edged scales; belly whitish.

Similar species

Narrow-banded shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis fasciolatus) - has bands of black scales (versus pale, dark-edged scales).
Unbanded shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis incinctus) - has an unbanded body (versus narrow bands).
Southern shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis semifasciatus) - has broad, dark bands (versus narrow bands).
